John MacGowan is a well-known artist in the yachting community and his beautiful oil paintings capture the best of nautical scenes and traditional landscapes. A top-level racer, with five America’s Cup campaigns under his cap, he combines his love for sailing and the outdoors with his artistic vocation. His work can be found in Newport galleries: Fisher Gallery, Harbor Fine Art, Jessica Hagan Fine Art and Sheldon Fine Art. In Wickford, RI the Five Main Gallery, and on Martha’s Vineyard, the Eisenhauser Gallery, all just steps away from the downtown waterfront. Created in his studio on Bellevue Avenue, John’s paintings have found homes in galleries and private collections worldwide.

“I am known as a Plein Air painter,” says MacGowan. “I paint most every day in the summer months thanks in large part to a local group of regulars leading the charge. Our tight-knit group can be found most mornings around Aquidneck Island capturing the favorite motifs on canvas. This is the best part about outdoor painting: Being on location and making it social and fun. After a few hours, I have completed another beautiful painting.”
